Civic body of Gurugram, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) is finding itself on an ever-increasing backlog of property ID cases. Thousands of homeowners are languishing as they wait to have record corrections and correct tax bills.
The Numbers
- 5,390 property ID objections and applications are pending with MCG
- 51% (2,740) of these are stuck at the civic body’s own level
- 32.7% (1,764) have been sent back to residents for extra documents
New IDs Are Delayed Too
- 886 new applications of property ID are pending.
- 585 are awaiting action by MCG
- 301 were sent back to applicants with more information.
What's Causing the Errors
Residents and RWAs have flagged:
- Duplicate property IDs
- Wrong classification of residential vs. commercial properties
- Incorrect ownership records
- Incorrect tax bills because of incorrect plot sizes.
One of the officials of the taxation department stated that there are 80-100 clerks, each dealing with objections in the 8 zones of the city, and a clerk receives 30-40 files daily.
Demand is even greater as the state has given an extension to the property tax rebate deadline to August 31, compelling more residents to self-certify their records.
A Major Staff Shake-Up
In May 2026, MCG transferred 134 clerks out of its property tax branch following allegations of:
- Corruption
- File tampering
- Collusion with property brokers
People had complained that employees were intentionally stalling files, canceling applications with no reason and referring individuals to middlemen in a bid to accomplish tasks.
According to officials, these clerks had been at the same branch almost 10 years and have created a well-established network that is hardly monitored.
They were repositioned, being replaced by personnel who had been pulled in, to sanitation, engineering, establishment and other departments, the first time in ten years.
